Triple Option Offense Breakdown

This offense is ideal for run first and smart decision making quarterbacks. Georgia Tech and Navy are two big time programs that run this offense and the Redskins ran some plays when RG3 was there. It is not unusual for the quarterback to lead the team in rushing for the season in this offense and only throw around 10 passes per game. This far in the Navy season their QB has 133 carries, 80 more than the next player on his team.

  • The first option is for the QB to hand it to the RB directly behind him. The QB reads the DE in this video to see if he crashes on the back. The QB then pulls the ball to move on to his next read.
  • The second option is for the QB to turn upfield and run it himself. The read here is the OLB as he comes hard at the QB.
  • The third option is the Wingback who runs the option with the QB. Since the OLB came hard at the QB, he uses his third option to pitch it to the Wingback.

If the quarterback makes the right reads, this play should be very hard to stop as the DE and OLB on the run side go unblocked as they get taken out of the play by misdirection leaving only defensive backs who should be blocked by the WR and other Wingback.
