10 Quick Football Basics

  1. A football field is 100 yards long, plus 10 yards on each side for the end zone.
  2. Each team has 11 players on the field at all times
  3. The line of scrimmage is where the ball is hiked from at the beginning of each play. (blue or white line on TV)
  4. The offense has 4 tries, called downs, to either gain 10 yards or score.  It is called a first down when this occurs. (Yellow line on TV)
  5. A sack is when the Quarterback gets tackled behind the line of scrimmage.
  6. There are 5 ways to score points:
    • Touchdowns: 6pts
    • Field Goals: 3pts
    • Extra Points: 1pt
    • 2pt Conversions: 2pts
    • Safeties: 2pts
  7. There are 4 ways the Offense turns the ball over to the other team called a turnover:
    • An Interception is when the defense catches a pass
    • A Fumble is when the offense drops the ball and the defense picks it up
    • When the offense is unable to get a first down in 4 tries called a turnover on downs.
    • When the offense punts or kicks the ball on 4th down
  8.  Special Teams are when the teams are kicking field goals, punting or kicking off
  9. The yellow flags the referees throw are for penalties
  10. Away teams wear White and the Home team wears their Team Colors
